Saga’s statistics for 2012 are as follows – these show that the animals allowed to breed freely in
private homes are a significant part of the problem of animal over population. People are letting
their animals have puppies and kittens. When they cannot or do not want to care for them, they
surrender them to Saga HS or let them out into the street.

SAGA Humane Society and the San Pedro Town Board are working together to help dog owners be better neighbours and members of the community.  This article will help you to understand what you can do, as a dog owner, to make San Pedro a more beautiful, happier and healthier place for residents and tourists alike. Don’t forget that when you choose to get a dog, your neighbours have no say in that choice.

  • All dogs should be kept up to date with their vaccinations.  This will help to stop them from catching or spreading diseases.  Rabies is a very important shot to keep up to date as rabies can be transmitted to humans and is life threatening.
  • All puppies are born with roundworms and there are other internal parasites that they can catch, such as tapeworms.  When a dog poops on the ground and has worms, there is a risk that someone could become infected.  For the health and safety of everyone, it is important to worm your puppies and adult dogs regularly.  There is a good reason it is an offence to allow your dog to poop in a public place and not clean it up immediately.  It is a health hazard to humans, especially children.
  • Fleas carry tapeworms, so making sure that you have effective flea protection for your pets is essential.
  • We all know how common ticks are, but they too transmit dangerous diseases, such as tick fever, to dogs.  Many beloved dogs die unnecessarily because the owners have neglected to protect their dogs from ticks.  Mosquitoes also carry the deadly heartworm and so it is very important that every dog is given heartworm prevention on a monthly basis.
  • Keep your dog under control at all times.  No one deserves to be frightened or hurt by your dog.  Make sure that your dog does not disturb garbage cans as this not only makes San Pedro look dirty, but is a health hazard.
  • Do not allow your dog to bark all night.  Everyone wants a good night’s sleep and it is unfair if you allow your dog to keep other people awake.
  • Neuter or spay your dog.  This will prevent them from spreading disease and from adding to the dog overpopulation problem we have in San Pedro. It will also make them healthier and more loyal.

To find out how you can be a great neighbour and to learn more about preventing, worms, fleas, ticks or if you want your dog neutered or spayed, please call SAGA Humane Society on 226 3266.

Saga Humane Society would like to offer our most sincere gratitude to our local businesses and supporters who helped make our recent fundraiser April 16 a rousing success.  Fido’s Restaurant & Bar hosted Kelly McGuire for a benefit concert, with proceeds going toward Operation SNIP.  Over $3,500 was raised to go toward the goal of sterilizing 75% of the dog and cat population of Ambergris Caye in the next 3-5 years.  The night’s event will be able to cover the cost of 75 island pets to be spayed or neutered.

It was a fun filled night with food and drink specials, good music, raffle drawings and Kelly showed his skill as the World’s Best Auctioneer. While the guests were enjoying the concert, our dedicated Saga volunteers were working the crowd selling raffle tickets, showing off auction prizes and gathering donations.

We would like to thank these local businesses and individuals for their continued support and donations for this event.  Brian Cook, (GM) Fido’s Restaurant & Bar for graciously hosting this event.  Steven Schulte (CEO) Tropic Air for round trip tickets from Cancun for Kelly McGuire to come to this event.  Kelly McGuire for his great performance, enthusiasm and auctioneer skills.

Auction items were:, an Underwater Adventure for 2 from Sea Trek, and a Blue Hole trip for 2 from Amigo’s del Mar, and 2 lovely Murano glass pendant necklaces. Kelly personally autographed a Saga t-shirt. Raffle items were Gift certificates from Crazy Canuk’s, BC’s, Belize Express for 2 round trip tickets to Belize City. Palapa Bar, Casa Picasso, a set of 4 Kelly McGuire cd’s .  Jim & Lori Prediger for helping to fill the donation can. Please show your support to these businesses that support their community.

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers who were champs at selling raffle tickets and helping organize this event. Eileen Jamison, Rosa LaRosa, Danny Cann, Geovannie Martinez, Elena Choc, Misty , Renee Steinmetz, Alice Corrigan and Faith Noel.

Mandy adopted Marcus from Saga in March of 2012, and he now lives in Canada with her and her family.  In Mandy’s own words:

“Marcus came to us at a time when I was resistant to letting another pet into my heart as I was still grieving the loss of our beloved Dogue de Bordeaux 2 yrs after she passed!  When our property manager in San Pedro advised me to get a ‘yard’ dog for added security, the kids convinced me that it was time to move on so we visited the dogs over at [Fort Dog]….we walked a few different dogs and although Fiona stole our hearts, she wasn’t suitable for protection as well as companionship so we went with Marcus who quickly found his own place in our hearts, our life and our family bed!  He has proven to be a very loyal, loving and protective companion for all of us and as you know, our family would not be complete without him.

I would like to express sincere gratitude to Saga and the volunteers who give up their own time to help connect these lovable little guys with forever homes!

(Marcus starts obedience training today; I will send you a pic when he graduates!)
