You might just have one cat or maybe even two.  They hang around, entertain the children and hopefully catch mice and rats.  They may be house pets, loved by the family for their personality and playful nature.  They might just be cats that aren’t really yours but you still put out food for them.  All of these cats are capable of having kittens and all of these cats are the reason that San Pedro now has an overpopulation of our furry feline friends.

Often people say ‘Oh I only let her have one litter’ or ‘I can find homes for them’ but if they knew the truth about cats and their amazing ability to reproduce, they would certainly think twice.  Just one unspayed female cat and her mate, along with their offspring will be responsible for producing over eleven million new cats in nine years.  Do we really want eleven million cats in San Pedro?

Cat overpopulation in San Pedro is bad news for people and cats.  Right now there are hundreds of stray and abandoned cats hiding in bodegas, alleys and only coming out at night to hunt, scavenge and reproduce.  These cats rarely live longer than two years as they succumb to injuries and disease.  They cause a nuisance by ripping open garbage, fighting and making noise as well as spreading infectious diseases.  They have no one to love them or care for them and that is the fault of the people who allowed them to breed and continue to breed.  Unfortunately, their irresponsibility has now become the responsibility of the community and SAGA Humane Society.

SAGA Humane Society is already overflowing with cats and kittens. Currently they have over 30 in their care and very few are being adopted.  If you walk around the Town in the evening, you’ll see many sad, sick and very skinny cats slinking between the golf carts and cars.  So, what can San Pedro do to stop it from raining cats?

Neutering and spaying are the only solutions.  These are very simple operations that can be performed by the veterinary surgeon and will not only prevent cats from reproducing but will reduce their risk of disease and injury.  If our community worked together, we could turn San Pedro into a place where all the cats and kittens have the homes and love that they need and deserve.

If you have a cat or kitten and you want to do the responsible thing, please contact SAGA about spaying or neutering.  If you are worried about the cost, let them know and they will do everything they can to assist.  If you know of a stray cat that has had kittens or is pregnant, please let SAGA know. To find out how you can help the cats of San Pedro please call SAGA on 226 3266.

BAILEY

BAILEY

Bailey is a sweet senior dog looking for a new home.  He’s very friendly and has tons of love to give.  Bailey is a very special case.  Since he is an older dog, we prefer a home with an older couple. Bailey has been passed on from several homes so he has some behavior issues. He needs a fenced yard, and a home with no kids.  He will also need some training with strangers.  We need an owner willing to work through these issues.  Bailey isn’t currently staying at Saga, so please contact Kathy at Pampered Paws (ph. 226-2227) if you’re interested in Bailey.

The San Pedro Saga Humane Society would like to offer our sincere thanks to all the people and businesses that helped make February 2013 a great start to Operation SNIP (Spay/Neuter Initiative Program). To celebrate Saga HS completed 60 free spay/neuters the week of World Spay Day, February 26, 2013.  World Spay Day is an annual campaign of Humane Society International and The Humane Society of the United States that shines a spotlight on spay/neuter—a proven way to save the lives of companion animals, feral cats, and street dogs who might otherwise be put down in a shelter or killed on the street. Operation SNIP is Saga HS ongoing plan to sterilize 75% of the islands’ animal population in the next 3-5 years.

This was a great partnership between local businesses and visiting animal welfare professionals from the USA. Dr. Don Tummons of Duck Hollow Animal Hospital in Uniontown, PA, Mary Maykuth, Heather Beck of K9 Lifeline in Draper, UT are superstars for coming to assist Saga HS with this event! Thanks also Ken and Joanne Hibbard of Durango, CO  for visiting local schools to talk about the importance of being a responsible pet owner and helping with our new education program for kids and to Matt Beatty for the donation of Hip to Snip stickers and Saga banners. Our deepest thanks to these dedicated professionals for using their knowledge, money, vacation time and skill to help the animals and their owners on Ambergris Caye.

Local business owners also see the importance of reducing the population of homeless animals. Prior to World Spay Day, Ramon Nunez of Ramon’s Village, through donations was able to raise $1400BZ and start the event’s fund raising efforts. Thank you for your continued support. The entire month of February Heather and Kevin Smith from Felize Bar & Grill held a weekly BINGO game to benefit Operation SNIP.  Through their efforts $1224BZ was raised. Thank you for your and other’s hard work, Saga HS was able to cover the costs of 60 spay/neuters for World Spay Day.

Thanks also to the folks at Bella Vista Susan, Victoria, Hugo, Manner, Yami, Matt and Suki the cat who helped make Dr. Don and Mary’s stay at Bella Vista memorable and also for their generous discount for the accommodations for these visiting Saga supporters.

Wednesday February 27 was Cook Off- Desserts at Average Joe’s Belize. It was a great turnout of residents and visitors alike.  There were 14 entries in all from some of the islands best restaurants and home chefs.  Casa Pan Dulce won with their outstanding Apple Pie with Ice Cream. Saga HS was able to raise $1993BZ from ticket sales, raffles, donations, plus another $2000BZ generous matching gift by Ms. Beck. With these funds another 60 animals can be spayed/neutered in Operation SNIP. Thank you for your support by attending this event.

The list of businesses, supporters and entries for the Cook Off are; Black Orchid, Lonsestar Grill & Cantina, LouAnn LeClair, Tara Traynor, Kakaw Chocolate, Carolina Gonzalez, Benjamin Vasques (Ellos), Elizabeth Burthley, AJ’s, Sand Bar, Amy Knox of Wild Mangos, Feliz Bar, Casa Pan Dulce. Thanks to Brian Cook of Fido’s for sponsoring a dish. Thanks to those who donated some pretty great prizes for our raffle. Ultimate Golf Cart Rentals, DJ’s Seaside Restaurant/Cross Fit Gym (opening end of March), Melt Café, and Black Orchid Restaurant.  Thank you to everyone who donated prizes, desserts or volunteered their time to helped make this night a success.

Saga HS will continue to focus on Operation SNIP through fundraising and offering free/low cost spay/neuter to the residents of Ambergris Caye.  The goal is to have another Operation SNIP clinic in the month of May and two others in 2013.  If you can help with lodgings for volunteer Veterinarian staff, meals or trips for these dedicated caring professions, please let us know how you can help with Operation SNIP.

It’s Hip to SNIP!

pow_chica

Hi!  My name is Chica.  I’m one year old and was rescued from the DFC area with my 5 kittens who are all now adopted.  As you can see I am getting plenty of attention from Kylie, Rochelle and Dulce here at Saga but I would love a full time home with you!  Please come see me and all my friends at the Saga Humane Society today!

A big round of SAGA thanks to Richard and Diana Gross of Sugar Land, Texas, who recently transported leashes from the US to San Pedro for Saga to give away at the Christmas Boat Parade.  Richard and Diana adopted a dog from Saga in the past and are great Saga supporters.  Thanks again!

Two years ago, “Peppito” arrived from SAGA to us in the city, and our lives were never the same again. My twins learnt the true meaning of love and caring for a pet, and he is such a smart, special, beautiful little dog. Rescue Dogs are the best… they are loyal and possess an intelligence that’s just amazing. Adopt an animal from a shelter… you’ll never regret it!
